In 1865, the thirteenth amendment was passed freeing all slaves during the civil war. The civil war ended in favor of the North and shortly after the fourteenth amendment was passed giving rights to African Americans.

During the reconstruction period, the government did not know what to do with all these freed slaves, so they created a freeman's Bureau which helped African Americans get jobs and built schools for the children.
"I don't know but my mama said this is what the white man's children do"
"What do you think they will teach us in this place?"
Due to a change in government, African Americans could not sustain themselves economically, therefore they became sharecroppers on plantations in order to survive.
At least now i can provide for my family.
In response to African Americans receiving rights, many states passed black codes, which limited the rights of African Americans. For example not allowing them to vote if they did not own land.

The only thing reconstruction did for us African Americans was to make sure we were still below the white man. They took the label of slavery away but we are still slaves in their eyes.
