  • Welcome children! I am Miss Caroline. I'm so glad to see you all today!
  • Miss Caroline
  • I have to say, this is kind of boring.
  • Jem and Scout begin the morning with walking to school.

  • Tell your father not to teach you any more reading. It's going to interfere with my lessons.
  • Scout meets her teacher, Miss Caroline, at school.
  • Hey Dill, I miss you a lot. I hope that you will come back soon. We can play games again!
  • Miss Caroline reads her class a book about cats, but the class is not engaged.
  • Here, take this quarter and buy lunch downtown. You can pay me back tomorrow.
  • At the end of the story, Miss Caroline prints the letters on the blackboard. When Scout reads the alphabet perfectly, Miss Caroline makes Scout read more literature.
  • Scout gets bored at her seat, so she starts writing a letter to Dill, in cursive. Miss Caroline sees it and gets upset. She tells Scout not to learn writing, because they are only going to learn how to print in first grade.
  • Soon it is lunch time. Walter Cunningham doesn't have a lunch. Scout steps up for Walter, but shames Miss Caroline.
