At the end of the story, Miss Caroline prints the letters on the blackboard. When Scout reads the alphabet perfectly, Miss Caroline makes Scout read more literature.
Scout gets bored at her seat, so she starts writing a letter to Dill, in cursive. Miss Caroline sees it and gets upset. She tells Scout not to learn writing, because they are only going to learn how to print in first grade.
Soon it is lunch time. Walter Cunningham doesn't have a lunch. Scout steps up for Walter, but shames Miss Caroline.
