Gandhi moved to South Africa in 1883, where many of his protests would begin.
in 1920, Gandhi held his Campaign of Noncooperation. It was an attempt to persuade the British government to give India the power to self-govern. It did not work, but this and many other peaceful protests made a big difference.
In 1948, Gandhi was assasinated by a Hindu nationalist in India because they did not like Gandhi's tolerance of Muslims. This sparked almost immediate outrage and rioting from his people.
