  • February, 1818: Douglass is Born in Tuckahoe, Maryland to Harriet Bailey and an unknown father.
  • 1827: Douglass overhears Mr. Auld scolding his wife for teaching him, and comes to the realization that to escape he must become literate
  • January, 1834: Douglass is hired out as a field hand to Edward Covey, a well known slavebreaker. Eight months later Douglass would beat Covey in a fight, giving him the courage he needed to escape.
  • 1836: Douglass, along with a few other slaves attempt to escape but are caught and imprisoned. Douglass is then taken out by Thomas Auld and sent to Baltimore
  • September 3rd, 1838: Douglass escapes slavery by using a sailors "protection papers."
  • September 15th, 1838: Frederick marries Anne Murray and changes his name to Frederick Douglass
