8 psuedopatients - confederates - rang admissions office of 12 physchiatric hospitals across 5 states. Once describing their symptoms, they were all diagnosed with schizophrenia.

All p's gave false names, addresses and jobs but everything else was true, eg. life events.

As soon as they were admitted, they would say they felt fine and couldn't hear voices.
Results: Type 1 error was made (false positive), by a calling a healthy person sick. P's spent on average 19 days hospital, some where even in the hospital for up to 52 days.
Additionally, queing early for lunch was seen as abnormal behaviour (thought to be oral acquisitive syndrome). Patients claimed that they felt powerless and depersonalised as they couldnt get and no doors on the toilets.
