- In this chapter, to Scout Finch, the youngest child of Atticus Finch. Scouts' dad is a lawyer and her mom passed away when she was 2. She has an older brother named Jem. Over the summer, her friend Dill came to stay for the summer and they spent their time playing together. Dill challenged Jem to touch the Radley House, a suspicious house in the neighbourhood, and Jem gave in.
- Chapter 4
- In this chapter, Scout began her first year at school. Her teacher, Miss Fischer, by Scout's reading capability. Miss Fischer told Scout to not receive any teaching from her father anymore.
- Chapter 5
- In this chapter, Scout started a fight with a kid at lunch and Jem stopped the fight. Back at school, Miss Fischer found "cooties" in a students' hair and sent him home. The student yelled at Miss Fischer, causing her to cry.

- In this chapter, school ended for the summer, and Dill came back to stay with Scout. The children came up with a game where they pretended to be the Radley Family. Atticus found them playing in the Radley yard and told them to stop. Scout was afraid because she thought she could hear someone in the laughing at them.
- In this chapter, Scout more time with their next dorr neighbor, Maudie Atkinson. She asked Miss Atkinson about Boo Radley. She explained that the Radleys are very strict Baptists, and they stay hidden for religious reasons. Meanwhile, Dill and Jem decided that they wanted to give a note to Boo Radley, but Atticus caught the group.
