- Speakeasies were a place away from the public eye where people could have a drink with their friends or family without getting in trouble with the law because of the 18th amendment or the prohibition. Speakeasies were pretty secretive and had secret entrances and exits in and out.

What the 18th amendment did is stop manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol which made many people turn to illegal ways of obtaining alcohol, so people turned to organized gangs, and crime to get alcohol
