- Mathilde, being born into a family that is not well-off married a little clerk named Mr. Loisel.

- The couple lived a fairly simple life but Mathilde was always dreaming for more – to the point that she was unhappy with her life.
- Falling Action
- Once, she was given the chance to attend a ball for the higher class she wanted to look the best for it. She did not want to look poor so she bought herself a new dress and borrowed a diamond necklace from her friend, Madame Forestier so she could show-off.
- Resolution
- Everything was great at the party and Mathilde was complimented a lot. But after the gathering, they realized that she had lost the diamond necklace. They looked everywhere but could not find it.
- The husband and wife then decided to buy a replacement necklace instead and it costed a large sum of money so they ended up getting in debt just to afford it. Mathilde and her husband then lived in extreme poverty and worked day and night to clear their loans.
- After bumping into Madame Forestier one day, Mathilde was floored when she was told that the necklace she borrowed was only a fake.
