The book Towers Falling is written in first person. It takes place early in the school year at Avalon Family Residence and Deja's school in Brooklynn, New York. The three main characters include Deja, Ben, and Sabeen. Minor characters include Miss. Garcia, Mr. Schmidt, Deja's parents and siblings, Ben's mom, and Sabeen's family. The theme of the story is that history is alive and personal.
The initial conflict in the story is that Deja and her family have to move into Avalon Family Residence and they are struggling to survive. Deja's dad is unable to work because of mental and health issues, while her mom is a waitress and struggles to support the family. Deja has to take care of her siblings while taking care of herself.
The rising action takes placeDeja goes to her new school and learns that two towers used to be in New York, but she doesn't know what happened to them, and she also meets Sabeen and Ben. The three be friends and go to Ben's house where Deja finds out the truth about the two towers. Because they are so interested, Ben and Deja decide to go to the 9/11 memorial, but their parents find out.
The climax takes place when Deja's dad tells her about his past. He was a security guard that worked in the twin towers when 9/11 occurred. He was able to save an elderly woman, and they got out of the building right before it collapsed. Although he did that, he feels guilty because he wasn't able to save more of his coworkers.
Deja realizes why her dad has all the problems he has, and she feels sympathy for him. She reassures him and lets him know that it is okay. Their bond with each other grows. They decide to go to the 9/11 memorial together.
Deja's dad finally gets the right medicine for him and it helps him feel better. Deja and her family will be able to move out of Avalon Family Residence and have their own apartment. They are all happier, and they are starting to feel like a family again.
