In the beginning, Jem yells at Scout and tells her that she needs to start acting more like a girl and leave him alone. She also discovers that Dill is not returning to Maycomb this summer. This upsets Scout.
Scout runs to Calpurnia and rants about her troubles. Calpurnia tells her not to worry, and that Jem is just a growing boy, so it is normal for him to lash out this way.
The state legislature is called to session, and Atticus is forced to leave his family and go into the capital for two weeks straight.
Calpurnia takes the children to her church, which is a "colored" church. It had been bought with the money of some of the first free slaves.
One of the women at the church, named Lula, calls Calpurnia out and says that she should not have brought white children into this church. However, the Reverend says how anyone is welcomed into the church.
Money is collected at the church for a woman whose husband has been accused of rape. The children later discover that Burris Ewell was the one that made this claim in the first place.
Lastly, the children return home to find that their aunt, Alexandra, is there waiting for them.
