You ALL will surrender to I, Persian King, Kind Darius ! Or face my soldiers !
We won't surrender to you...
We have been vistorious!!
After King Darius attacking us Athenians and our allies with 60,000 soldiers, they left with 6,400 dead and we only lost 420 Plataeans.
King Darius has ordered everyone to surrender to his rule or else, everyone did but the Athens and the Spartans. This is significant because this led of towards the battle against Persians and the Athens with their allies.
King Darius sent 60,000 troops to attack the Athens in the town of Marathon. The Athens had met the Persian troops with only 10,000 of their own. The Athens used a quick attack to kill of the Persians before they could settle, the Persians had retreated with 6,400 dead and only 192 lost with the Athens.
Athenians evacuate the city!!! The Spartans are holding off the Persians so we can evacuate but they are still coming !!!!
Pheidippides eager to spread the news of their victory ran 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to announce they had become victorious... soon after collapsed and died. This event inspired the modern marathon today !
We will not be dominated !!
King Darius swore revenge against the Athens but before he could collect his strongest troops King Darius died and handed his crown to his son, King Xerxes who then invaded Greece.
I want 250,000 soldiers, 1,207 triremes and 3,000 medium sized ships...
Hearing that the now King Xerxes would be leading the biggest army to finish off the Athens, and small group of Spartans, 300 to be exact held off the Persians as long as they could in order for the Athenians to evacuate the city, and sacrificed their lives. After successfully evacuating the Persians found an abandoned city.
After the Battle of Plataea, Persians left Greece for good. The Greeks formed an alliance called the Delian League to fight off the Persians. The Athens dominated the Delian League, as the Spartans did not like being dominated they went to war against the Athens, the Peloponnesian War. Fighting on and off for about 70 years, Spartan came victorious. But the Greeks became vulnerable to attacks from the Macedonians to the north since they were too busy fighting each other.
