  • In 1840 president Polk ordered Zachary Taylor to lead an army into the disputed region. Taylor led his troops to Rio Grande and camped Mexican troops. The 2 sides clashed and war was declared.
  • On August 18, 1846, Kerny captured Santa Fe without a fight.  He claimed the city  of New Mexico to the United States and left west to California, where another coonflict had already begun. 
  • On June 14 hostilities began between Americans and Californios when the Americans took some horses that belonged to the Mexican Militia. This became known as the Bear Flag Revolt.
