Mr. Lockwood, a gentleman from the town, rents Thrushcross Grange. He meets his landlord Heathcliff at Wuthering Heights, an estate across the moors.

Due to stormy weather, Mr. Lockwood stays at Wuthering Heights for a night. He discovers a mysterious diary and encounters the ghost of Catherine Earnshaw.

The next day, Mr. Lockwood asks Nelly, who is the housekeeper at Thrushcross Grange, to tell him about the history of Wuthering Heights. Nelly agrees.

Mr. Earnshaw brought an orphan from Liverpool to Wuthering Heights. Hindley and Catherine despise the child at first as his appearance is dark. Catherine soon becomes friend with Heathcliff. Hindley is sent to college because of his cruel behavior.
Catherine had to stay at Thrushcross Grange to get better after an accident where she bonds with Edgar Linton. Mr. Earnshaw dies. Hindley returns with a wife, becomes the master of the estate and treats Heathcliff like a servant.
Edgar proposes to Catherine and she agrees to marry him. Heathcliff is torn and leaves Wuthering Heights. Hindley's wife dies while giving birth to his son, Hareton.
