Mrs. Maudie gardening before the fire. She loved gardening so she decided to try to keep her plants from freezing by taking them inside.
"Hurry, hon. Here're your shoes and socks."
"Jem sloshed more water over the mud man and added more dirt."
Mrs. Maudie left the stove on, which caused the plants she was preventing from freezing, on fire. "I don't know Jem. Probably the flue in the kitchen. I kept a fire in there last night for my potted plants."
