SChism(multiple popes), simony(buying church jobs), and indulgences (selling forgiveness) caused reformers to speak out.
The stairs are important because people were told by priests that if you climb these stairs on your knees God will forgive all of your sins. The big idea that Martin Luther decided on these steps was that no one knew if your sins were really going to be forgiven by God by kissing each step that you climbed on your knees.

During the time that Martin Luther was at the Wartburg Castle he had called himself Junker Jorg, he grew a beard, and grew out his hair. He also translated the new testament from it original language to German. He completed this in 11 weeks.
