President William McKinley wanted peace. He didn't want to go to war with the Spaniards.
Territory gained and Treaty of Paris
The U.S.S Maine moved into the Havana Harbor to protect the American citizens. It blew up on Feb. 15, killing 250 people.
The US sent demands to the Spanish. They wanted compensation for the USS Maine, an end to reconcentration camps, and a truce with Cuba.
The US gained Puerto Rico and Guam. The Spaniards gave up the Philippines for 20 million dollars. The Treaty of Paris was signed in December 1898 by the US and Spain, ending the war.
