  • Personification
  • Simile
  • Imagery
  • The narrator says "It was not the old man I felt I had to kill; it was the eye, his Evil Eye" (Poe 79). That is personification of the old man's "evil eye." Though the narrator never describes the eye of doing human things, he sees it from being separate from the old man
  • "So I opened it you cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthily until at length a single dim ray like the thread of the spider out from the crevice and fell upon the vulture eye"  "So I opened it you cannot imagine how stealthily until at length a single dim ray like the thread of the spider out from the crevice and fell upon the vulture eye"(Poe 81). This compares a single dim ray to being the thread of the spider out from the crevice.9That shows the narrator comparing the dim ray to  thread of the spider out from the crevice using like.
  • An example of imagery in the story is when Poe has startled the old man in his sleep and is now frozen in time to avoid being caught by the old mans “Vulture” eye. “Death, in approaching him, had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim.” This can also be interpreted as foreshadowing.
