  • In 1789, France spent a lot of money on wars, especially their participation in the American Revolution. France spent more money than they received. Their income at the time was low, at the same time taxes increased. King Louis XVI was the king at the time. He was the head and above the three estates.
  • Stage 4-Storming of Bastille
  • The 3rd estate was made up of the majority of the citizens, the common people. The 3rd estate paid all the taxes for all three estates. In 1789, the 3rd estate broke of from the other two estates, because of the taxing.
  • Stage 5-National Assembly Governs France
  • Follow the Declaration of The Rights of Man!
  • After the 3rd estate broke off, they formed the National Assembly. The citizens in this group created a constitution for France. In the Declaration of The Rights of Man, it basically enforced life, liberty, and fraternity. The assembly was an act of rebellion towards the other estates. They basically swore to never separate until they got what they wanted.
  • On July 14th, 1789, the citizens who were in the National Assembly attacked the Bastille. The Bastille was a state prison. The angry mob demanded guns and cannons. The attack soon turned into to battle. The citizens killed soldiers, and the governor. This battle is what led to the French Revolution.
  • Also in 1789, the National Assembly governs France. They passed forward the Declaration of the Rights of Man. People were divided due to the new law of the National Assembly. The law took property away from the Catholic Church, and made the Priests work for the government. After this, angry Catholics went against the revolution.
