  • Stop rebelling!
  • The Continental Congress formed the Articles of Confederation to gain independence from Great Britain through the American Revolution.  This served as a written document that established functions of the United States government after the U.S. declared independence from Britain.  It is known as the first U.S. Constitution.
  • We are an independent nation!
  • We will work together, no one has too much power!
  • The soldiers from the Revolutionary War came home to high taxes on their farmland. They are not able to provide for their families by keeping the farmland, and will be arrested if they do not pay the taxes. They rebel against the government. This is known as Shay's Rebellion.
  • Shay's Rebellion incited anarchy . The government broke up the rebel army with things such as, attacts on wealthy land owners, liberation on jailed farmers, or arson.
  • America needed a stronger centralized government.  The founding Fathers decided not to change the Articles of Confederation, but to create an entire new government. All states except Rhode Island sent delegates to Philadelphia to agree on the new U.S. Constitution. This new government would allow for a strong centralized government, with no branch having too much power.
