Storyboard Text

  • Three witches in Scotland swear to meet with Macbeth "when the battle is lost and won."
  • When shall we three meet again — In thunder, lightning, or in rain?
  • When the hurlyburly's done, When the battle's lost, and won.
  • That will be ere the set of sun.
  • True, worthy Banquo, he is full so valiant, And in his commendations I am fed; It is a banquet to me. Let's after him, Whose care is gone before to bid us welcome. It is a peerless kinsman.
  • The'merciless Macdonald' is at war with King Duncan, and Macbeth has been fighting well. Duncan executes the Thane of Cawdor for treason and replaces him with Macbeth.
  • Lady Macbeth, Macbeth's 'dearest love,' welcomes him home. She advises him to assassinate King Duncan that night in order for the prophecy to be accomplished and Macbeth to become king.
  • Prithee, peace. I dare do all that may become a man; Who dares do more is none.
  • Which thou esteem'st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem,Letting 'I dare not' wait upon 'I would,' Like the poor cat i' the adage?
  • On his way to assassinate Duncan, Macbeth sees a vision of a dagger with its handle pointing at him.
  • Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still. Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible To feeling as to sight, or art thou but A dagger of the mind, a false creation, Proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain? I see thee yet, in form as palpable As this which now I draw.
  • He disregards it as a figment of his imagination brought on by the 'bloody business' he is about to commit, and then murders King Duncan in his bed.
  • Thou sure and firm-set earth, Hear not my steps, which way they walk, for fear Thy very stones prate of my whereabout, And take the present horror from the time, Which now suits with it. Whiles I threat, he lives. Words, to the heat of deeds, too cold breath gives.
  • O, by whom?
  • Macduff and Lennox arrive at the castle, where they will encounter Duncan. They find the murdered king, and Macbeth explains that he murdered Duncan's guards in 'fury.'
  • Those of his chamber, as it seemed, had done 't.Their hands and faces were all badged with blood;
  • O, yet I do repent me of my fury, That I did kill them.
