One night, at dusk, during the carnival season, Montresor tells Fortunato about a cask of Amontillado, using Fortunato's pride and his connoisseurship of wine against him. Montresor has planned retribution for Fortunato's alleged insults.
As they travel towards the cask's location, Montresor explicitly asks if Fortunato wants to go back, because Fortunato has a bad cough that is worsened by the mold on the walls. Fortunato insists they continue on.
After consuming a bottle of wine, Fortunato makes a gesticulation with it that Montresor does not regognize. Fortunato asks whether he is of the brotherhood, and Montresor shows him a trowel as proof.
Montresor tells Fortunato that the cask of Amontillado is inside the crevice in the wall. Fortunato enters the crevice.
Montresor chains the drunk Fortunato inside the alcove. Montresor's revenge and Fortunato's immolation would finally become a reality.
Before laying the final stone and sealing in Fortunato forever, Montresor, leering, taunts him. Afterwards, Montresor lays the stone, sealing Fortunato's fate.
