How am I going to get Jim a gift with only $1.87??
Della wonders how she's going to get Jim a gift.
Della makes a rash decision.
Just do it... I really need the twenty dollars.
Are you sure?
It's the day before Christmas and Della has been saving up her money all year. She wants to buy Jim and present, but realizes she only has $1.87.
Della goes shopping
She stares at her upset self in the mirror. She pulls down her hair and it falls to it's full length. She has an idea and quickly pulls on her old brown jacket and and her hat.
Della asks Madame if she'll buy her hair. The madame offers twenty dollars for it. Della desperately agrees to do it.
Unsure of her newly cut hair, she heads to a shop with $21.87. She goes through many stores trying to find Jim the gift she wants to get him.
Jim comes home and with a blank expression on his face once he see Della's hair. Della is worried that Jim will no longer think she is feminine. She gives Jim the chain that she bought since he didn't have one for his pocket watch. She then explains how she cut her hair to buy him the chain for him.
Jim, still in shock, hands Della her present. It's a beautiful set of combs she wanted to put in her long hair. Della is still ecstatic even though she can't put them in her hair at the moment. Ironically, Jim sold his pocket watch to buy the combs for Della, making both presents not useful. In the end, Della and Jim are both grateful that they sacrificed their most valuable possession for each other, even though the end result was not positive.
