Mathilde loses Madame Forestier's necklace and decides to buy her an imitation that she has to pay off over the course of 10 years. Mathilde tells her that shes miserable because of her but Madame says that her necklace was only worth 500 francs
After Mathilde figures out, Madame Forestier gives her the necklace back in guilt. Mathilde trades the necklace in for money. A few years later Mathilde's husband realizes how greedy and selfish she is and divorces her.
