Douglass fed the horses and helped out on everything Douglass didn't like working to a lot because it was in the summer and it was very hot they were not giving water a lot and not even food One night Douglass reached Covey’s about 9:00 and as soon and Douglass was over the fence there Covey was ready to whoop Douglass but Douglass started to run into the cornfields so he could hide and Covey couldn't find him Covey kept looking and looking but he still couldn't find Douglass then Covey just gave up because he knew Douglass had to come get food so Covey went inside that's when Douglass went to Sandy Jenkins a slave. Sandy had a free wife but Douglass then remembered that its a Saturday and Mr.Covey was coming over so as soon as he did Douglass explain and Covey let him go to the house Douglass has to go with Mr.Covey into the woods to get the root because with that root no white man would be able to whoop Douglass so Douglass got it.
Douglass one day just got mad at Covey and didn't like the way he was getting treated so he started to fight Covey and all the slaves were surprised about it even Covey was so they started punching and kicking each other and Douglass didn’t back down and then Covey fell he didn’t whoop Douglass because he knew he couldn’t beat Douglass. Douglass used to work very hard and he didn't like the way he was being treated and the way he was being taken cared of so he thought it would be a good thing to fight Douglass because it could change his life and that's when Douglass started to grab Covey and punch and this was so important to Douglass because it could change his life of being treated like property or being a slave and Douglass was doing the best he could to defeat Covey and Covey was surprised because he has never seen a slave do this and at that one point Douglass couldn’t do anything to Douglass and he gave up.
Now Douglass is a free man and he tells himself that he will be a free man and never act like a slave again he says he wants to be treated like a true and regular human being and treated like he’s a real person and he wants to the respect that he deserves Douglass never wanted to be a slave again and he can’t wait to be a new different man
