In the 1830's Te Rauparaha traveling from Kapiti Island to the Banks Peninsula where he wanted to surprise his Ngāi Tahu enemies.
Arrival at Banks Peninsula where Te Rauparaha wanted to avenge the killing and eating of several Ngai Tahu chiefs.
Captain Stewart convinced Te Maiharanui to come on board with his wife and daughter by saying that he will trade muskets for flax if they come on the boat.
The warriors that were on the boat then came out and attacked the settlement.
They then set out with Te Maiharanui and his wife and daughter on board the boat heading back to Kapiti Island. While on their way back they killed Te Maiharanui's, daughter and threw her overboard.
After their arrival at Kapiti island, Te Maiharanui suffered death by slow torture at the hands of the widows of the Ngāti Toa chiefs slain at Kaiapoi; his wife met the same fate.
