Storyboard Text

  • "Eurylochus spoke. My other comradesall agreed. So then I understood too wellsome god was planning trouble"(Hom. Od. 12.384-387).
  • Although Odysseus told his men to skip Helios' Island, his men were too starved to pass up finding food.
  • Let's skip this island! No! We're Hungry!
  • Odysseus' men decide to round up the cattle.
  • "But to die from lack of food, to meet one’s fate that way is worst of all.  So come, let’s drive away the best of Helios’ cattle. "(Hom.  Od. 12.342-344).
  • I see cattle! Let's round them up to prepare them for food.
  • "They quickly rounded up the finest beasts from Helios’ herd, which was close by, sleek, broad-faced animals with curving horns grazing near the dark-prowed ship"(Hom. Od. 12.462-465).
  • They found the best of Helios' cattle and rounded them up.
  • "They bear no young and never die... They cut the creature’s throats, flayed them, and cut out portions of the thighs"(Hom. Od.12.130-131,469-470).
  • The men killed the cattle, but they never truly died.  Thus, the men were able to distribute the beef among themselves.
  • "Once we’d left that island,no other land appeared, only sky and sea.  The son of Cronos sent us a black cloud, above our hollow ship, while underneath the sea grew dark"(Hom.Od.12.529-534).
  • The wrath of Helios was about to come out to Odysseus and his men by Zeus' power.
  • "Then Zeus roared out his thunder and with a bolt of lightning struck our ship"(Hom.Od.12.543-544).
  • Finally, Zeus struck their boat down with thunder.
