...You will be treated with great honor throughout the community...
I will now transmit the memory of snow.
Jonas is an average guy livin' it up in utopia. He's eleven, goes to school, and hangs out with his friends. One day though, something about his friend Fiona changes. Her hair changes, somehow, but he can't put his finger on it. He will soon be assigned a job at the ceremony of twelve, and is apprehensive about it
Why do I have to bear these memories alone!? It's not fair!
At the Ceremony of Twelve, Jonas is selected to be The Receiver of Memories. This job given every decade, and it is the highest honored role in his community. The community leader tells him he has the ability to 'see beyond', which means he can see colors, unlike the rest of the community.
It's okay little guy.
He goes to his job per his instructions and meets the man who will train him. The previous receiver now receives the title 'Giver'. The Giver is able to transmit memories of the past, and gives Jonas his first memory. It is of sledding on snow down a hill.
We're gonna make it Gabe...
Now, after many days of receiving memories, Jonas has experienced pain like nobody in the community has known. He is different. His outlook on life is much more pessimistic now. On the bright side, he can see color all the time now! :)
Jonas's father is a nurturer for his community, and is tasked with releasing twins if there are to be some. Jonas asks to see the ceremony of release, as he is interested in what may happen. He finds out the truth and is outraged. Now more than ever, Jonas is fed up with the ways of the community. He makes a plan with the Giver to escape.
Jonas finally goes through with the plan to escape. He left early, and did not get all the memories he could from the Giver. He takes Gabriel, a baby who was given extra time to develop but in the end was going to be released. Jonas had hoped he would find elsewhere with Gabriel, but things are not looking up for the duo. Will they survive?
