  • Situational Irony
  • My life has been jinxed.
  • I am going to name you Fortunato because I want all good things to come to you.
  • Dramatic Irony
  • Amontillado? I am the best wine connoisseur in Italy! I would love to come taste it.
  • That's what he thinks...
  • When Montresor was taking Fortunato to the catacombs, he said "we will go back; your health is precious." It is ironic because he ends up killing him and he doesn't care for Fortunato's health.
  • Foreshadowing #1
  • What is that for?
  • Fortunato's name has the root of "fortune." He is definetly not fortunate in this story.
  • Foreshadowing #2
  • Nemo me impune lacessit
  • The reader knows that Montresor is trying to take advantage then kill Fortunato. Fortunato just thinks he is going to try some amontillado.
  • Foreshadowing #3
  • When it is revealed that Montresor has a trowel, it foreshadows that he will use it in his plan for Fortunato.
  • Stuff
  • The Montresor family motto is "nobody attacks me without punishment." Montresor claimed that fortunato insulted him so with the motto it foreshadows that Fortunato has to be punished.
  • Nice motto.
  • It's a family phrase.
  • Montresor started to lead Fortunato into the catacombs which foreshadows that since the catacombs are a place for dead bodies, Fortunato's fate will be the same.
  • Why are there so many bones?
  • It's a hobby.
