Persephone and her mom Demeter were very happy living on Mount Olympus. They loved each other very much. Persephone was always ¨so lovely and full of grace.¨ Hades, who was stuck in the underworld, fell in love with Persephone, and he knew he would have to kidnap her if he wanted her to be his queen.
One day, as Persephone was gathering flowers, Hades opened the ground and a chariot came out of the ground with dark horses and Hades. Hades grabbed Persephone and dragged her down from Mount Olympus into the underworld. Demeter was very upset and looking everywhere for Persephone, but she was gone without a trace.
In the underworld, Hades put Persephone on the throne and gave her jewels and gold, but she was very unhappy. She refused to eat the food of the dead and watched the dead souls drink from the spring of Lethe. Persephone wanted to be with her mother up in the world full of sun. While she was in the underworld with Hades, "her heart turned to ice".
Demeter was extremely sad without her daughter. All of nature died, and the "flowers wilted, trees lost their leaves". Because Demeter was sad, nothing could grow, and Demeter turned into an old woman. One day Demeter was searching for Persephone in a meadow. She met a man who told her that his brother has seen pigs vanishing into the ground and heard a girl scream. When Demeter heard this, she knew that Hades had taken Persephone into the underworld.
When Demeter found out that Hades took Persephone, she became very angry. She told Zeus that she would never turn anything green again. Zeus knew that the world couldn't survive without Demeter, so Zeus had Hermes bring Persephone up from the underworld. Hades obeyed and let her go. As they were leaving, a gardener noticed that kernels from a pomegranate tree were missing. Persephone had eaten the food of the dead, and Hades knew that she must return to the underworld.
Demeter was so joyful to see Persephone that she turned nature beautiful once again, but then Persephone told her mother about eating the food of the dead. Persephone returned again to Hades, but Zeus wouldn't let them be apart forever. She had to spend one month with Hades for every seed eaten. Demeter was very sad during this time, so the weather turned cold and nature died. When Persephone returned, Demeter was happy, the weather turned warm, and spring began.
