The longhorn cattle were useful to people in many ways; their horns were used to make household items such as cups decorations and furniture, they were also hollowed out to store gunpowder in, their long legs allowed them to travel great distances so they took less time to transport from place to place for beef. When the civil war broke out longhorns became more valuable because the demand for beef increased in size.
Many people came to Texas hoping to get a fortune in oil, because of this small towns became large cities. These fast growing towns were known as boomtowns. Boomtowns were places that were crowded and dirty, because of this very few women and children lived here.
Railroads were cheap and fast. They could transport goods in two hours on a 40 mile trip while other kinds of transportation would take all day. They were more reliable than other kinds of transportation and they also brought trade and businesses to many towns across Texas.
