In this chapter Cassie realizes that people like her are treated differently. She realizes this because Mr. Barnett was taking white people's order first. Cassie was outraged and was being ignored. Cassie, not understanding the situation, went up to Mr. Barnett and told him that she was there first. After this, Mr. Barnett yelled at Cassie, used foul language, and kicked her out of the store.
In this chapter, Cassie is looking for revenge on Big Ma. In the previous chapter, Big Ma made Cassie apologize to Lillian Jean for bumping into her. Cassie did not appreciate that, because she did nothing wrong, and Uncle Hammer and Papa would have done differently. Since she knew that Uncle Hammer would be angry at Big Ma, she decided to say it as a way of revenge. Uncle Hammer took exception to this and was angry.
In this chapter, T.J. tricks Stacey into giving him his nice jacket, which he received from Uncle Hammer. He told Stacey that he looks like a fat priest in the jacket and was not his size. T.J. also said that it was his own size and he would give it back when he grew into it. Uncle Hammer was shocked, but if he's not good enough to appreciate a coat like that, he does not deserve it.
