  • Hey Bill, how's the house painting coming along?
  • Not very well. I have just one problem that I can't figure out, and it's how long the ladder should be
  • It's pretty easy really, you just have to use Pythagorean Theorem
  • How could I have been so foolish to forget such an important concept?
  • You see, bill, If the wall is 15 feet high, and we need a sturdy base, such as 5 feet, it is quite easy to figure out how long the ladder needs to be. I'll draw it out for you.
  • 15 ft.
  • 5 ft.
  • ?
  • I also know that since the ladder is the hypotenuse, it is c. So, c is about 15.811 feet long. Meaning the ladder has to be that long.
  • 225 + 25 = c^2 250 = c^2 c  ≈ 15.811 ft.
  • a^2  + b^2 = c^2
