Many slaves dealt with disease and injuries, but one day they were freed.
After being freed, ex-slaves needed a home but had little money or skiils. They ended up renting land from their former slave owners. They did this by sharecropping. Sharecropping meant the ex-slave would give a little portion of their crop to the owner to pay their rent.
I don't have any money but I need a home for my family. Please, can you help?
I suppose...But in order to pay your rent you need to give me a portion of your crop.
Although this idea was clever, it didn't work. This usually resulted in slaves being in major debt due to farming expenses, and due to debt, they were forced by poverty or violent threats to sign unfair labor contracts. This caused slaves to live in poverty, and because of this, many slaves died of diseases and starvation.
In conclusion, since ex-slaves were not given an education or money it led them to extreme poverty and death. If ex-slaves received money and education this may have never happened.
