It was said around the island and at school that Al Capone does the laundry. On page 47, Piper says, "if you pay five cents you can get your clothes washed by famous convicts."
In the book, Piper lives in the warden's mansion. On page, 13 it says that Piper is Warden William's daughter so she would live in his house.
According to the text it says that Mrs.Capone came to visit Al Capone. She was caught carrying metal through the snitch box. Mrs. Capone came to the island to see Al Capone and to fight for him to be freed from Alcatraz. All of this is explained in chapter 22.
The cons on Alcatraz did do the laundry for everyone on the island. This is proven in a interview that Jennifer Choldenko did. In the interview the old women had lived on Alcatraz when she was young and found that her father's shirt had been teared down the middle.
On Alcatraz, the warden's house was the second biggest building on the island. This is proven true by pictures of the warden's house and map of the old Alcatraz island. According to the author's note, it says that "the warden lived in a beautiful mansion located right next door to the cell house."
This event did occur in real life on Alcatraz island. Mrs.Capone was caught carrying metal. In the author's note it says "Mrs.Capone, who barely spoke English, was visibly embarrassed at having to strip down to her corset, revealing the metal stays that had tripped the metal detector.
