Storyboard Text

  • Good morning class! Today I will be teaching you about early Jamestown.
  • Jamestown
  • In 1607 more than 100 colonists sailed on the James River and created many settlements on the land next to it. JOHN SMITH was a founder of Jamestown.
  • Jamestown
  • There were many dangers like Spanish warships and harsh winters, but despite all of this the colonists thought that they were strong enough to survive.
  • Jamestown
  • By the end of December only 40 colonists were left because of disease and starvation. Most colonists would use the gross river filled with  bacteria to bathe and dispose of waste. This caused disease to spread, and because of the harsh winters many starved to death.
  • Jamestown
  • After a resupply ship saved the colony more people started to arrive. By 1611 two-thirds of the settlement were dead. Even though all of this happened the colony ended up surviving and continued to grow.
