On the 6th of February, 1840, representatives of the British crow, and 40 Maori chiefs signed the treaty of Waitangi
Kawiti and his men were waiting at the pa when Hone heke another great Maori chief came to help them he brought his men and together they had about 500 men which was nothing compared to the British army.
However the Maori refused to give up the pa until they had to and well... they had to. Despard wanted to attack Kawiti’s men before they escaped but George grey and wake nene who was helping them disagreed.
Some British scouts that were spying in the pa discovered that only Kawiti and a dozen Maori men were left inside the pa hiding. The scouts told Despard and Grey and they prepared to attack for the final time.
Kawiti and what was leftover from his men ran down out of the pa and into some bush. The British men chased them but were ordered to stop because they realised that the Maori were trying to lure them in.
To run into the bush but were attacked from all different directions and then the Maori charged out as if they wanted to retake the pa conflict fizzled out everywhere and soon the fight became to big to handle and the Maori gave up the pa leaving the pa for the British making them think they won but had they?
