Florian and Emilia arrive at the barn used by Joana, the shoemaker, and Klaus the orphan. This is an important scene because it is the beginning of when they start traveling to the port together, this is just the beginning of them trusting each other.
Another important scene in the book is when Florian, Joana, Emilia, the shoe maker, and Klaus finally boarded the Gustoff, because, for that moment, they were safe until at 9:15 when torpedos were shot by Russian submarines. The only survivors were Florian and Joana who had recently confessed their love for one another and who adopted Klaus and Halinka.
In an important flashback, Alfred turns Hannalore's father in for being Jewish. As Hannalore is being taken away, he tried to tell her that her mother wasn't Jewish, which made Hannalore exclaim very loudly that she was Jewish by yelling "I am Jewish!". This connects to when Emilia revealed she was Polish and how she also yelled:"I am Polish". This scene shows that Alfred is a coward.
