Clementine and Zia take their daughter, Flora, to the hospital only to receive some shocking news...
She seems to be falling very frequently and have trouble getting up. Not to mention she's not "the sharpest tool in the shed".
MOMMY IT HURTS!
Our daughter has trouble walking and tells us she feels pain when doing so.
Oh no.. How could this had happened??
Oddly, it is very rare for a female to get this, but not impossible. Males are more prone to acquire this because if something goes wrong with their one X chromosome they have nothing to back it up or make up for it.
Flora seems to have symptoms of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophin, a genetic disorder that affects the muscles and the mother is the carrier
This disease is caused by a change or "mutation" in the dystrophin gene which leads to no dystrophin production. Over time, muscles will experience extreme degeneration.
Without dystrophin, a muscle will tear and not repair itself, leading to weakness of themuscles.
Though there is no cure, there are many treatments such as Eteplirsen or Corticosteroids that can minimize the symptoms and even increase muscle strength.
With these treatments, Flora could still live a long, prodcutive life, so there's no need for tears
