Theme: A theme, or central idea, is an underlying message about life or human nature that a writer wants the reader to understand.
Symbolism: A symbol is a person, a place, an object, or an activity that stands for something beyond itself.
In the article,"Scarlet Ibis," there is many symbolism. One of them is the color red. The color red symbolizes death, the Scarlet Ibis bird, the red nightshade bush, and blood running down from Doodle mouth and neck. "Even death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers, and we stood around it, awed by its exotic beauty." "He was looking up to a bleeding tree."
The theme of Scarlet Ibis is selfishness. The boy helps his brother to walk, talk, swim and etc so that he doesn't have to be carrying Doodle all over the place with the go-cart. He wanted to get rid of Doodle from his side.
