  • Raphael was an artist a few years younger than Leonardo and Michelangelo. Raphael studied the works of those great masters, and blended Christian and classical styles in his paintings. Raphael painted The School of Athens which pictures an imaginary gathering of great thinkers and scientists. He also is known for his tender portrayals of the Madonna.

This painting is displaying an imaginary gathering of great thinkers and scientists, including Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, and Averroë. I also included Leonardo, Michelangelo, and myself of course. This painting makes me a humanist because it is focused on us great thinkers and scientists in the here and now."

  • Humanism was focused on studying the here and now, and classical culture. Humanists moved on from studying religious issues to worldly subjects, and increase their understanding of their own times. Humanists believed education should stimulate individual's creativity. Raphael was a humanist because The School of Athens focused on thinkers and scientists in the here and now, who weren't religious leaders. Also, he praised everyone in his painting, praising individual achievements

  • Niccolo Machiavelli had served Florence as a diplomat, observed kings and princes in foreign courts, and studied ancient Roman history. He wrote a book, The Prince, in 1513 guiding rulers on how to gain and maintain power. His ideas have been looked at and debated ever since.

Machiavelli was a humanist. He was a humanist because he focused on teaching people how to be good rulers in the here and now. He also used his personal experience of politics to write The Prince. Lastly, he told people that they were responsible for becoming great rulers which shows individual acheivement.
