  • "...he clung to me, crying, 'Don't leave me. Don't leave me.'" (Hurst 318) This reveals that William is clingy and afraid of being alone.
  • Actions: Narrator
  • "'I can't walk, Brother,' he said. 'Who says so?' I demanded. 'Mama, the doctor-everybody.'" (Hurst 318) This reveals that Mama is doubtful and hopeless in the idea that William will ever walk.
  • Looks: William
  • "'All you've got to do is try. Now come on,'" and I hauled him up once more. (Hurst 318) This reveals that the narrator is determined and won't stop helping William until he can walk.
  • "I ran as fast as I could, leaving him as far behind with a wall of rain behind us." (Hurst pg 6) This reveals that the narrator is a little cruel and reckless towards William since he's leaving him on purpose.
  • "He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red and shriveled like an old man's." (Hurst 316) This reveals that William is dependent on everyone around him. He was born with medical problems, so his family will need to take care of him.
