Virginia, Autumn of 1861
Papa, I've decided to join the Union Army. I'm sorry.
As of this moment, you are a traitor to the South. Please don't tell your mother about your decision. She is sick, and we both know she only has a few weeks to live.
I will see you again. But I cannot say that we will not be adversaries.
Months later, Carter lay asleep on a dusty trail, dirtier than a pig in mud, supposedly scoping out Confederate troops.
Suddenly, like lighting, a strange horseman appeared on the cliff overlooking where Carter lay.
Glancing back to the valley, Carter noticed that the Union regiments he was scoping for were out in the open, in clear sight of the enemy.
The horse reared up, and Carter shot at it. Then, he suddenly felt that the face on the horse was familiar. Then, it plummeted over the cliffside.
I order you to report. Who was on the horse?
.... My father.
