  • After Moishe escaped the Gestapo in Poland, he went back to Sighet to warn the Jews. Elie described his emotional state after the escape, saying... "Moishe was not the same. The joy in his eyes were gone... He only spoke only of what he had seen..." (Wiesel 7)
  • Chapter II - Fire
  • After attending a meeting with the Council, Elie's father tells his neighbors the news. " 'The news is terrible,' he said at last. And then one word: 'Transports.' " (Wiesel 13)
  • Chapter II - Smoke
  • Elie starts to question his faith in a loving God. "'For the first time, I felt anger rising within me. Why should I sanctify His name?'" (Wiesel 33)
