  • When Britain and France went to war, the US traded with both countries because they didn't pick a side. In 1805, Britain and France tried to stop each other from trading with the US to search all ships trading with france, and France announced they would search and seize all ships caught trading with Britain.
  • The Embargo Act
  • The British needed soldiers for their novel war. Many of their own sailors had deserted due to terrible living conditions. While British novel ships began traveling and stopped American ships to find British deserters, the British forced the sailors to return to the British navy.
  • Broken Treaties
  • The British often waited for American ships outside an American harbor, where they boarded and searched them. In June of 1807, a British warship called Leapord stopped an American vessel called the Chesapeake off the coast of Virginia. The other ships (Leapord) captain demanded to search the Chesapeake for British stowaways, but the Chesapeake captain refused, so the British opened fire and killed three crew members.

  • Banned imports and exports to all foreign countries. Jefferson wanted to prevent Americans from using other countries as go-to betweens for forbidden trade. It was a disaster, unemployment rose in New England. Without European markets, the south couldn't sell tobacco or cotton. The cost of wheat fell. Britian simply bought goods from other countries.

  • Settlers wanted more land in the Ohio River Valley. Native Americans already gave up thousands of acres, so this started conflict. Some Native Americans renewed contact with British agents and fur traders in Canada. Others pursued a new strategy. A Shawnee chief tried to build a confederacy among native American nation in the northwest.

  • Supported increases in military spending and were driven by hunger for land. They wanted to expand the nation's power and the fertile forests of South Canada. 
  • This is a forest in South Carolina, which the War Hawks wanted to expand.
