  • Pick a scene that supports the idea that although beaten down, the prisoners had creative ways of coping with their confinement and sustaining themselves. This scene supports the idea that the prisoners find a way to cope because the veterans would tell stories about what the camp was like a few years ago, as it was much worse then.
  • In lines 32-33, Wiesel writes, "the old men stated in their corner, silent, motionless, hunted-down creatures. Some were praying. "Which words in this quotation have strong connotations? How do these words convey the tone of Wiesel's narrative? The words old, silent, and praying give a sense of hopelessness as they give you the image of people who are too weak or sick, so they would likely be selected and killed, like Wisele's father.
  • Wiesel sometimes uses punctuation and sentence structure to convey meaning. Reread the second to last paragraph in the text. Why does he use short, incomplete sentence ? How does this stylistic approach affect meaning? Punctuation used in this sentence structure creates dread as it is unknown if Eli's father passed, and the dread makes it more intense.
