  • After a while, Susan wanted to get Ada's foot fixed, but they needed consent from their mother. After asking, her mother rudely declined saying that Ada doesn't need to be fixed.
  • After, Susan decided to get Ada some crutches to help her walk better. After a while, Ada and Jamie's mother wanted to take Ada and Jamie back, so they were forced to return the their abusive mother. when they got back, her mother began to abuse her by taking away her crutches and insulting her.
  • When Ada and Jamie go into town, they feel sad about being apart from Susan and all of a sudden, the Germans started to attack again. They had to get into the storm shelter and they stayed there until the sirens stopped. After, they decide to try and go back to Susan's home because they didn't like their mother. When they arrive, they find whole home wrecked after being hit directly with a German bomb. When the neighbors come out from the wreckage, they were shocked to see Ada, Jamie, and Susan. They were all happy because they thought the three of them had been inside the house. The moral of this book is that real family is accepting, kind, and will stay by your side whenever you need them.
