Storyboard Text

  • One ofFerdinand Magellan’s five ships—theVictoria—arrives at Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Spain, thus completing the first circumnavigation of the world. The Victoria was commanded by Basque navigator Juan Sebastian de Elcano, who took charge of the vessel after the murder of Magellan in the Philippines in April 1521. During a long, hard journey home, the people on the ship suffered from starvation, scurvy, and harassment by Portuguese ships. Only Elcano and 21 other passengers survived to reach Spain in September 1522.
  • March 16 Pigafetta reported that they reached what Pigafetta called the isle ofZamal, now Samar but Magellan decided to land in another uninhabited island forgreater security where they could rest for a few days.

  • then on March 25th, Pigafetta recounted that they saw two ballanghai (balangay), a long boat fullof people in Mazzava/ Mazaua. The leader, who Pigafetta referred to as the kingof the ballanghai (balangay), senthis men to the ship of Magellan.

  • By April 7th of the same year, Magellan and his men reached the port ofCebu. The king of Cebu, through Magellan’s interpreter, demanded that they paytribute as it was customary, but Magellan refused.
  • Magellan’s interpreter explained to the king of Cebu that Magellan’sking was the emperor of a great empire and that it would do them better to makefriends with them than to forge enmity.

  • Magellan died in that battle. The natives, perceiving that the bodies ofthe enemies were protected with armors, aimed for their legs instead. Magellanwas pierced vyith a poisoned arrow in his right leg.
