A Secret Place Main character: Unknown Young Australian boy By: Grace Forster Teacher: Ms Smith
"i don't remember much about the crash. Just treetops rushing past and dad telling me to hold on. i dragged him out of his seat . He's still unconscious. his leg still looks as if it is broken. The first aid booklet shows you how to mend it but i don't want to be the one to do it." page 81-82 this quote describes how the boy crash lands with his father into an unfamiliar environment and his fathers injury. This is the exposition as it introduces all the characters and the setting. It also gives you a sense of the responsibility and pressure that is put on te boy
The boy climbs onto the roof of the plane and attaches bandages to a tree as a signal, instantly losing hope when it starts to rain. "Don't know why i bothered, the canopy's probably to thick anyway. Useless. Like this place." Page 82 This quote is part of the rising action as it gives you a sense of hopelessness and despair that is increasingly starting to wash over the boy. it shows you that the boy has a hostile attitude towards the environment.
A plane flies directly overhead and the boy plashes into the river just missing it. He hears the plopping sound again and scrambles back to the bank "The plane was our best chance. maybe our only chance. And we've mist it. Damn this canopy! Damn the crocodile! Damn everything here!" page 83 This quote gives you an insight on how the boy is feeling and the sorrow and frustration he must be experiencing. This part is the climax as it is the section of the story when he is building up more and more hope and developing a more open and optimistic attitude only for it to be taken away from him again.
The raft has been the boy's main focus for last few days and he thinks he is finished when he takes it to the river to test out. Once he puts it out in the water it sinks straight to the bottom leaving him standing there out in the pouring rain. The next day he gets to work on strapping the empty drums onto the raft. "Groan! that meant a lot more heavy work for tomorrow" page 87 This quote is part of the falling action as everything is starting to come together and a plan is forming between the father and the boy. It shows you that he is trying as hard as he can and trying to maintain an optimistic attitude even when things are going wrong and life is tough. he is getting more at one with the environment.
"I was helping Dad to the raft when i heard it, clack-clack-clack of a helicopter followed by a down rush of blustery wind. The two men being lowered in the helicopter stood stairing at us in amazement" page 90 "i think it's about time you two return to the future" (page 90 as well) This line is crucial to the resolution as it ends the story with a metaphorical quote summing up what their lives have been like for the past two weeks and the state that they are in. The protagonist is now more at one with the environment and with nature only to leave again.
"I THINKS IT'S ABOUT TIME YOU TWO RETURN TO THE FUTURE."
