- In 1540, Henry married Anne of Cleeves in an attempt to ally England with the. Protestant Duchy of Cleeves against Catholic France and Spain
- Henry had only ever seen portraits of Ann, when he saw her in person he thought she was ugly and divorced her
- Henry's next wife was Catherine Howard. She was young and pretty and the marriage in 1540 helped Henry win the support of the powerful Duke of Norfolk. Catherine was accused of adultery and in 1542 she was executed.
- In 1543, Henry married his sixth wife, Catherine Parr
- She nursed Henry through various illnesses and outlived him when he died in 1547
