  • After the victory of Saratoga, soldiers had to suffer through the harsh winter of Valley Forge. Soldiers shivered in drafty huts, got diseases, and ate unsanitary food.
  • Weaknesses of the Confederation
  • Bro, I claim Vermont!
  • Most states of the U.S. wrote constitutions to spell out rights and limit the power of government. To vote, a citizen had to be over 21, male, while, own some land, and pay some taxes.
  • Shays' Rebellion
  • My farm will not be seized!
  • The Continental Congress approved the Articles of Confederation. Under the Articles, Congress could declare war, handle foreign affairs, appoint military officers, and coin money.

  • There were many weaknesses under the Articles of Confederation since it was not strong. There was fighting/conflict between states, money problems, and countries taking advantage of the U.S.

  • Taxes became too high for many farmers to pay them, so Daniel Shay started a rebellion. Farmers attacked courthouses, and Americans knew it was a sign of a weak government.
  • The states and delegates agreed to make an entirely new constitution. In September of 1787, the delegates signed the Constitution that started with "We the People..."
